Manchester City left it late to turn control into goals, but once the breakthrough arrived, Pep Guardiola’s side powered clear for a convincing 3-0 Premier League win over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
For an hour, Brentford stayed compact and disciplined, frustrating City despite long spells of possession and a steady stream of chances. The home side finished with 59.1 percent of the ball, 25 shots, 10 efforts on target and 10 corners, numbers that told the story of a match largely played on Brentford’s half of the pitch.
Still, the first half ended goalless. City probed and circulated the ball with patience, but Brentford held their line and forced the hosts to keep searching for the final touch. Bernardo Silva went into the book in the 36th minute in one of the few notable first-half incidents, and the visitors reached the interval level at 0-0 with plenty still to do.
The pattern did not change after the restart, but the pressure finally told on 60 minutes. Jérémy Doku broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, giving City the opening they had been pushing for and lifting the tempo around the Etihad.
From there, the fixture tilted decisively in City’s favor. Nico O’Reilly was shown a yellow card in the 74th minute, but any hint of tension disappeared a minute later when Erling Haaland doubled the lead in the 75th minute. It was a classic City one-two punch: sustained pressure, then a ruthless finish once space began to appear.
Brentford never really found a route back into the match. Thomas Frank’s team managed only four shots and two on target across the 90 minutes, spending much of the evening without enough possession to trouble City’s back line consistently. Kristoffer Ajer was booked in the 80th minute and Jordan Henderson followed him into the referee’s notebook in the 88th, underlining a difficult closing stretch for the visitors as they tried to contain the damage.
City were not done. Omar Marmoush came off the bench and added a third in stoppage time, finishing in the 90’+2′ minute to put the result beyond any doubt. Marmoush was then booked in the 90’+5′ minute, but by then the points were already secure and the Etihad was celebrating another polished home performance.
In the context of a busy Premier League run-in and with attention across the league sharpened by live developments elsewhere, this felt like a timely and professional result from City. They were made to work for it by a stubborn Brentford side, yet the second-half surge showed the depth and quality Guardiola can call on when matches remain tight deep into the afternoon.
The final score perhaps looked more comfortable than the first hour felt, but City earned it. Doku’s goal in the 60th minute cracked the contest open, Haaland’s strike in the 75th minute gave the champions full control, and Marmoush’s finish in the 90’+2′ minute added late gloss to a strong 3-0 victory.
