Bay FC left Snapdragon Stadium with a hard-earned three points on Sunday night, riding an early goal from Racheal Kundananji to a 1-0 victory over San Diego Wave FC in National Women’s Soccer League action.
The decisive moment arrived almost immediately. Kundananji found the breakthrough in the 5th minute, finishing Bay FC’s first real attacking thrust to put the visitors ahead 1-0. It was the only goal of the match, but it set the tone for a fixture that demanded discipline, resilience and plenty of defensive concentration from the away side.
San Diego responded with plenty of intent and saw more of the ball over the course of the evening, finishing with 53.6 percent possession. The Wave also generated the greater volume in attack, recording 14 shots and six efforts on target, but they could not find a way past a Bay FC side that stayed compact and committed after taking the lead.
Bay FC were more selective going forward, ending the night with 10 shots and three on target, yet Kundananji’s early finish in the 5th minute was enough to separate the sides by full time. The visitors also had to navigate a feisty contest that featured a steady stream of cautions. Claire Hutton was booked in the 11th minute, Aldana Cometti followed in the 15th, Karlie Lema went into the book in the 43rd, and Anouk Denton picked up another yellow in the 47th for Bay FC. San Diego’s Dudinha was cautioned in the 54th minute, with Perle Morroni shown yellow in the 59th.
The closing stages brought more tension still when San Diego were reduced to 10 players in the 86th minute after a red card, making an already difficult chase even steeper. Even so, the Wave continued to push through stoppage time, forcing Bay FC to defend their penalty area and protect the narrow margin all the way to the final whistle.
At the break, Bay FC held a 1-0 advantage, and the second half produced no further goals despite San Diego’s pressure. The home side won four corners to Bay’s two and created 10 shot assists, but the finishing touch never arrived.
For Bay FC, this was a road result built on taking an early chance and then managing the fixture intelligently. For San Diego Wave FC, it was a frustrating night in front of 13,508 supporters — plenty of possession, enough looks at goal, but no breakthrough. In the end, Kundananji’s 5th-minute strike stood as the match-winner.
