North Carolina Courage and Portland Thorns FC played out a high-tempo 2-2 draw on Saturday night at WakeMed Soccer Park, with all four goals arriving in a breathless first half in Cary.

The Thorns struck first in the 12th minute when Reilyn Turner (12′) found the net with a header, giving the visitors an early foothold despite North Carolina seeing more of the ball. The Courage responded well and were level in the 28th minute through Manaka Matsukubo (28′), capping a strong spell from the home side.

That parity did not last long. Portland restored their lead five minutes later when Olivia Moultrie (33′) finished to make it 2-1, a reminder of the Thorns’ attacking quality even while spending long stretches without possession. But the Courage again had an answer, and Ashley Sanchez (37′) made it 2-2 before the interval to complete a frantic opening 45 minutes.

After the break, the fixture settled into a more tactical contest. North Carolina controlled 59.9 percent of possession and forced seven corners, while Portland remained dangerous in transition and actually finished with more total shots, 15 to 13. Both sides put efforts on target consistently, with the Courage registering seven shots on frame and the Thorns six, but neither could find the decisive goal in the second half.

There was still plenty of edge to the closing stages. Portland substitute Evelyn Ijeh went into the book in the 80th minute, and North Carolina substitute Deyna Castellanos was shown a yellow card in the 84th as the intensity remained high deep into stoppage time.

In the end, a draw felt like a fair outcome between two sides that traded punches in an electric first half and stayed disciplined enough after the break to avoid giving the other a winner. For the 7,018 in attendance, it was an entertaining NWSL night defined by sharp attacking play, momentum swings and four well-taken goals before halftime.
