Bay FC seized control with a devastating spell before halftime and never truly let go, earning a 3-1 away win over North Carolina Courage in Saturday’s National Women’s Soccer League fixture at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.

The visitors were clinical when the match began to open up, turning a relatively even contest into a commanding first-half lead. Alex Pfeiffer broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, finishing Bay FC’s first telling breakthrough to put the away side in front.

From there, Bay FC smelled vulnerability. Keira Barry doubled the advantage in the 30th minute, capping another sharp attacking move, and just four minutes later Dorian Bailey made it 3-0 with a header in the 34th minute. In the space of 14 first-half minutes, the fixture had swung emphatically in Bay FC’s favor.

North Carolina Courage did enjoy slightly more of the ball, finishing with 51.1 percent possession, but Bay FC were far more incisive in the decisive moments. The visitors ended the night with 15 total shots and seven on target, compared with 13 shots and only two on target for the Courage.

The home side tried to reset after the interval and at least gave the crowd of 7,013 something to respond to. Manaka Matsukubo pulled one back in the 65th minute, offering North Carolina a route back into the match at 3-1. But Bay FC stayed organized, managed the tempo well, and prevented any real late surge from developing.

There was still an edge to the contest, reflected in yellow cards for Bay FC’s Keira Barry in the 41st minute, North Carolina Courage forward Evelyn Ijeh in first-half stoppage time at 45’+9′, and Karlie Lema in the 76th minute. Yet the main story remained Bay FC’s first-half efficiency and composure.

In the end, the opening 45 minutes told the whole tale. Bay FC led 3-0 at the break and were able to play the second half on their terms, while North Carolina Courage were left to rue a costly stretch in which the visitors cut through them with ruthless precision.
