Portland Thorns FC made an early statement in the National Women’s Soccer League on Friday night, defeating Seattle Reign FC 2-0 at Providence Park in a rivalry fixture that had quality in the final third, pressure from Seattle, and no shortage of drama.

The Thorns did their damage before the interval, with Pietra Tordin opening the scoring in the 28th minute and Reilyn Turner doubling the lead in the 37th minute. From there, Portland showed resilience and discipline in the run of play, even as the contest turned increasingly chaotic with a pair of red cards against the home side.

The opening stages were anything but routine for Portland. Cassandra Bogere was shown a yellow card in the 8th minute and then sent off a minute later in the 9th, forcing the Thorns to adjust almost immediately. Down a player, Portland could easily have been pushed back for long stretches, and Seattle did go on to enjoy the bulk of possession, finishing with 61.6 percent of the ball and a 17-8 edge in total shots.

But while Seattle had more territory and more attempts, Portland were sharper where it mattered most. The breakthrough arrived in the 28th minute when Pietra Tordin headed home to put the Thorns in front, a goal that lifted the crowd and rewarded Portland’s efficiency in transition.

Less than 10 minutes later, the hosts struck again. Reilyn Turner found the net in the 37th minute, giving Portland a two-goal cushion and sending the Thorns into halftime with a commanding 2-0 lead despite the early adversity.

Seattle tried to respond after the break and kept asking questions, earning eight corners and putting four shots on target. Yet the Reign could not find the cutting edge. Portland, by contrast, matched Seattle with four shots on target of their own and made superior use of their opportunities.

The second half brought more disciplinary trouble for the Thorns when Reyna Reyes was sent off in the 57th minute, leaving Portland to navigate the closing stages with even greater resolve. Marie Müller also went into the book in the 58th minute as tempers continued to simmer in a fierce rivalry atmosphere. Seattle picked up late cautions as well, including one for Holly Ward in stoppage time.

Still, for all of Seattle’s pressure, Portland never let the match slip. The Thorns defended their box with conviction, protected their clean sheet, and saw out the final whistle to secure an impressive home win.

It was a result built on clinical finishing and grit. Tordin’s 28th-minute header and Turner’s 37th-minute goal decided the fixture, but Portland’s ability to absorb pressure after a turbulent night on the disciplinary front was just as decisive. For Seattle, the underlying numbers suggested opportunity, but the final result reflected a lack of precision in front of goal.

At full time, it was Portland Thorns FC 2, Seattle Reign FC 0 — a rivalry victory that will be remembered as much for the Thorns’ resilience as for their first-half finishing.
