Seattle Sounders FC booked their place in the next round of the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday night, coming from behind to defeat Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 in the second leg at ONE Spokane Stadium and complete a commanding 5-1 aggregate victory.
For much of the evening, Vancouver looked determined to make the fixture uncomfortable. The Whitecaps saw more of the ball, finished with 60.3 percent possession and outshot Seattle 14-11, but the Sounders once again showed the kind of ruthlessness and composure that can define cup ties.
Vancouver struck first in the 24th minute when Jeevan Badwal found the breakthrough, giving the visitors a deserved lead on the night and briefly raising the possibility of late tension in the tie. The Whitecaps had started brightly and carried a sharper edge in the opening half, while Seattle were forced to absorb pressure and wait for their moments in transition.
The Sounders went into the interval trailing 1-0 on the night, but still firmly in control of the aggregate picture. Even so, Brian Schmetzer’s side needed a response after the restart, and it eventually arrived in decisive fashion over the final quarter of an hour.
Seattle’s equalizer came in the 79th minute, when Daniel Musovski rose to head home and level the match at 1-1. It was a timely goal, not only settling the hosts but also draining the remaining belief from Vancouver, who had put plenty into their first-half effort without finding the second goal the tie demanded.
Just four minutes later, the Sounders completed the turnaround. Paul Rothrock struck in the 83rd minute to put Seattle in front on the night for the first time, capping a clinical late surge and sending the home support into full voice. Two second-half goals, both coming after Vancouver had worked tirelessly to stay alive, underlined Seattle’s ability to punish any dip in concentration.
While Vancouver can point to strong spells of possession, five corners and five shots on target, their discipline and momentum were chipped away by a series of bookings, with Mathías Laborda shown yellow in the 5th minute, Aziel Jackson in the 15th, Ralph Priso-Mbongue in the 77th and Sebastian Berhalter in the 80th. Seattle also had their share of cautions, with Snyder Brunell booked in first-half stoppage time and Stefan Frei seeing yellow in the 89th minute.
In the end, the night belonged to the Sounders’ finishing. Seattle put four shots on target and turned two of them into goals, making the most of their key attacking moments despite spending less time on the ball. That efficiency, paired with the cushion built in the first leg, made the difference across the two-match series.
For Vancouver Whitecaps, Badwal’s 24th-minute goal was a bright note in an otherwise frustrating elimination. For Seattle Sounders FC, Musovski’s 79th-minute header and Rothrock’s 83rd-minute winner ensured there would be no drama in the closing stages.
Full-time in Spokane: Seattle Sounders FC 2, Vancouver Whitecaps 1. And over two legs, Seattle move on emphatically, 5-1 on aggregate.
