San Diego FC had most of the ball, but Sporting Kansas City left with the points. André Luiz’s 76th-minute penalty decided Saturday’s Major League Soccer fixture at Snapdragon Stadium, giving the visitors a 1–0 victory despite the hosts enjoying 66.8 percent possession.
It was a frustrating evening for San Diego, whose territorial advantage produced 16 shots and eight corners but no breakthrough. Sporting, meanwhile, made their smaller share of possession count, registering six shots on target to the hosts’ four.
Goalless first half leaves the contest open
Neither side found the net before the interval, leaving the match finely balanced at 0–0. San Diego would finish with almost twice Sporting’s possession, yet the final attacking numbers showed that the visitors remained a threat: Kansas City attempted 15 shots, just one fewer than their hosts.
The second half brought a succession of bookings before the decisive goal. San Diego’s Marcus Ingvartsen received a yellow card in the 57th minute, followed by Sporting’s Lasse Berg Johnsen in the 61st. Manu Duah went into the book for the hosts in the 67th minute, Justin Reynolds for the visitors in the 70th, and Christopher McVey for San Diego in the 72nd.
André Luiz delivers from the spot
The breakthrough arrived in the 76th minute when André Luiz converted a penalty to put Sporting Kansas City ahead. With neither side having found a way through in open play, his spot-kick supplied the match’s defining moment.
San Diego could not produce an equaliser, and Sporting protected their narrow advantage through the final whistle to secure an away clean sheet and all three points.
Possession without the payoff for San Diego
The contrast between control and cutting edge told the story. San Diego held a 66.8–33.2 percent possession advantage and won the corner count 8–4, but Sporting put more attempts on target despite seeing far less of the ball.
For the hosts, it was a reminder that possession alone does not settle a fixture. For Sporting, the combination of a clean sheet and André Luiz’s decisive 76th-minute penalty proved enough to turn a closely contested evening into a valuable road victory.
