San Diego Wave FC produced a composed second-half performance to defeat Kansas City Current 2-0 on Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium, capitalising on an own goal before Kennedy Wesley’s stoppage-time header put the result beyond doubt.
In front of 10,761 supporters in San Diego, the sides went into the interval level at 0-0 after an even, physical opening 45 minutes. The Wave held more of the ball and finished with a 57.9% share of possession, but Kansas City remained dangerous from set pieces, winning eight corners to San Diego’s four.
The breakthrough arrived five minutes after the restart. Kansas City defender Laney Rouse turned the ball into her own net in the 50th minute, handing the Wave a 1-0 advantage and changing the rhythm of the fixture.
San Diego pushed for control rather than simply protecting the lead, ending the match with 15 shots and four on target. Kansas City generated 14 attempts of their own and also put four on target, but could not find a response. The Current’s task became considerably tougher when Rouse was shown a red card in the 89th minute, having already been booked in the 68th.
The Wave made the numerical advantage count almost immediately. Kennedy Wesley headed in San Diego’s second goal in the 90+1st minute, delivering a late exclamation point to a disciplined home performance.
Melanie Barcenas received a yellow card in the 76th minute and Kristen McNabb was booked in the 84th as the Wave saw out a competitive contest. The victory moves San Diego’s record to 14-3-8, while Kansas City leave California at 11-5-9.
