LAFC put one foot toward the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals on Tuesday night, turning clinical finishing into a commanding 3-0 first-leg victory over Cruz Azul at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
Despite seeing less of the ball for long stretches, LAFC were ruthless in the decisive moments. Son Heung-Min opened the scoring in the 30th minute, David Martínez doubled the advantage in the 39th, and the young attacker struck again in the 58th to leave Cruz Azul with a mountain to climb before the return leg.
The final scoreline reflected LAFC’s sharpness in both boxes. Cruz Azul enjoyed 65.2 percent possession and won seven corners, but they could not translate territorial pressure into a breakthrough. LAFC, by contrast, finished with eight shots, five on target, and three goals — the kind of efficiency that can define a cup tie.
The breakthrough arrived just after the half-hour mark. Son Heung-Min, operating with the poise expected of a marquee forward, found the net in the 30th minute to settle the home side and ignite the crowd. Cruz Azul had shown some willingness to push numbers forward early, but Son’s goal shifted the rhythm of the fixture and handed LAFC the control they wanted.
From there, the hosts smelled vulnerability. David Martínez struck in the 39th minute to make it 2-0 before the interval, capping a blistering spell from LAFC and giving the Liga MX visitors a major problem heading into halftime. Cruz Azul’s frustration was already beginning to show, with Amaury García booked in the 34th minute during a difficult first half for the away side.
Any hopes of a second-half response were dealt a heavy blow when Martínez added his second goal of the night in the 58th minute. At 3-0, LAFC had a firm grip on the tie, and their game management from that point was impressive. They stayed compact out of possession, limited clear openings, and made sure Cruz Azul’s spells on the ball rarely turned into real momentum.
Cruz Azul continued to press and did finish with 15 shots and five efforts on target, but the cutting edge was missing. Agustín Palavecino was shown a yellow card in the 61st minute as the visitors tried to force their way back into the contest, while LAFC defender Sergi Palencia entered the book in the 80th minute during a more controlled closing phase. Rodolfo Rotondi was also cautioned deep into stoppage time at 90+3′.
For LAFC, this was the ideal first-leg performance: absorb pressure, strike with conviction, and carry a clean sheet into the second meeting. Son Heung-Min’s 30th-minute opener set the tone, but Martínez’s brace in the 39th and 58th minutes turned a strong night into a potentially decisive one.
The quarterfinal is not over yet, but LAFC could hardly have asked for a better platform. Cruz Azul will believe they can create chances in the return fixture, especially after controlling possession here, yet overturning a three-goal deficit against a side this organized will be a daunting task.
As first-leg statements go, LAFC’s was emphatic.
