Washington Spirit made their second-half dominance count on Sunday afternoon, earning a 2-0 National Women’s Soccer League victory over Bay FC at PayPal Park in San Jose.

After a goalless first half, the fixture swung decisively in the visitors’ favor in the 57th minute when Bay defender Brooklyn Courtnall turned the ball into her own net, handing Spirit a breakthrough their pressure had been threatening. Gift Monday then put the result beyond doubt with a well-timed finish in the 86th minute to cap an increasingly one-sided second period.

For long stretches, Bay FC managed to keep Washington at bay despite spending much of the match without the ball. The home side went into the interval level at 0-0, but the numbers hinted at what was coming. Spirit finished with 62.1 percent possession, 20 shots, 10 efforts on target and 12 corners, repeatedly forcing Bay deeper and deeper inside their own half.

Bay FC, by contrast, struggled to generate sustained attacking rhythm. They ended the match with just six shots, only one on target, and 37.9 percent possession. While they stayed organized for much of the opening half, they could not find a way to relieve the pressure often enough after the restart.

The opener arrived in unfortunate fashion for the hosts. In the 57th minute, Brooklyn Courtnall’s own goal tilted the match Washington’s way and left Bay chasing. From there, Spirit continued to dictate territory and tempo, moving the ball sharply and pinning Bay back with wave after wave of attacks.

Bay remained within touching distance until late on, but Washington’s persistence produced the insurance goal in the 86th minute when Gift Monday found the net to make it 2-0. It was a fitting reward for a Spirit side that carried the greater attacking threat all afternoon.

There was one final blemish for Courtnall, who was shown a yellow card in the 90th minute, summing up a frustrating day for Bay’s back line against a relentless visiting attack.

In front of an announced crowd of 10,237, Washington Spirit delivered a mature away performance: patient in the first half, assertive in the second, and ultimately deserving winners. Bay FC will feel the opening goal was cruel in its nature, but the overall flow of the match favored Spirit, who left Northern California with three valuable points.

Goals: Brooklyn Courtnall (own goal) 57′, Gift Monday 86′.
