Orlando Pride left it astonishingly late on Friday night, but Haley McCutcheon delivered twice when it mattered most to seal a dramatic 2-1 National Women’s Soccer League victory over Angel City FC at Inter&Co Stadium.
For long stretches, this fixture looked destined to finish goalless. Angel City saw more of the ball and ended the night with 62.8 percent possession, while Orlando were happy to stay compact, absorb pressure and look for their moments in transition. The Pride still carried a threat, however, finishing with 17 shots and six efforts on target, enough to keep the visitors uncomfortable even during the quieter spells.
The first half ended 0-0, with the main flashpoint coming in the 21st minute when Angel City defender Savy King went into the book. Orlando’s physical edge grew after the interval, and yellow cards for Angelina in the 63rd minute and Barbra Banda in the 65th reflected the rising intensity of a hard-fought contest.
Eventually, the breakthrough came in the 84th minute. McCutcheon found the opening and put Orlando Pride in front at 1-0, rewarding a patient home side that had continued to probe despite seeing less possession. With the stadium sensing all three points were close, the Pride looked set to manage the closing moments.
But Angel City had one more twist of their own. Deep into stoppage time, Gisele Thompson struck in the 90’+2′ to make it 1-1, a gut punch for Orlando and a lifeline for the visitors, who had managed only one shot on target all night but made it count.
That could have been the final word in another wildly dramatic NWSL finish. Instead, McCutcheon stepped up again. In the 90’+8′, she completed her brace and restored Orlando’s lead at 2-1, sending the home support into celebration and snatching back the result in the dying seconds.
It was a ruthless finish from Orlando in a match that demanded patience and resilience. Despite trailing Angel City in possession and only marginally edging the corner count 5-3, the Pride were more dangerous in the key moments and made their pressure tell late. Angel City will rue conceding so soon after their stoppage-time equalizer, especially after controlling much of the rhythm of the match without turning that control into clear-cut end product.
McCutcheon was the unquestioned match-winner, scoring in the 84th minute and 90’+8′ to turn a tense evening into a memorable one for the Pride. Thompson’s 90’+2′ goal briefly looked like it had rescued a point for Angel City, but Orlando’s final surge ensured the hosts took all three.
In front of an announced crowd of 8,040 in Orlando, this was the kind of chaotic, emotionally charged finish the league has become known for: one equalizer, one rapid response, and a home side that refused to settle for anything less than victory.
