Seattle Reign FC made their fast start count on Saturday night, doing enough in the opening 45 minutes to secure a 2-1 victory over Racing Louisville FC in National Women’s Soccer League action at ONE Spokane Stadium in Spokane, Washington.
The Reign were clinical when the key moments arrived before the interval, with Maddie Mercado opening the scoring in the 10th minute and Nérilia Mondésir doubling the advantage in the 41st. Racing Louisville FC carried far more attacking volume across the full fixture and pushed hard after the break, but their reward did not arrive until Macy Blackburn found the net in the 90’+4′ minute.
Seattle’s early control was reflected where it mattered most. Mercado’s 10th-minute goal settled the home side and gave the Reign a platform to manage the first half on their terms. With 56.4 percent of possession overall, Seattle were not dominant in every phase, but they were efficient and composed, turning limited openings into a decisive halftime lead.
The second goal just before the break felt especially significant. Mondésir struck in the 41st minute to put Seattle Reign FC 2-0 ahead, a blow that left Racing Louisville FC chasing the match despite showing plenty of attacking intent of their own. By the interval, the Reign had converted both of their shots on target, while Racing still had work to do to turn pressure into end product.
That pressure did arrive in the second half. Racing Louisville FC finished with 19 total shots and six on target, compared with Seattle’s six shots and two on target, and they spent long stretches asking questions of the Reign back line. The visitors also earned two corners to Seattle’s one and created 13 shot assists, evidence of a side that kept probing even after falling behind by two goals.
Still, Seattle found a way to protect the lead. The Reign’s defensive shape held up through the bulk of the second half, even as Racing searched for a route back into the fixture. Louisville’s frustration showed when Macey Hodge went into the book in the 63rd minute, but the visitors never stopped pressing.
The late twist came in stoppage time, when Blackburn scored in the 90’+4′ minute to cut the deficit to 2-1 and inject late tension into the closing seconds. It was too late to fully change the night, though, and Seattle Reign FC saw out the remaining moments to claim all three points.
For Seattle, this was a result built on sharp finishing and a strong first half. For Racing Louisville FC, the final margin will sting because the visitors generated enough chances to make much more of the evening. In the end, the Reign’s ruthlessness before halftime proved the difference.
