San Diego Wave FC turned a patient first half into a convincing second-half performance on Saturday night, defeating Chicago Stars FC 2-0 at Snapdragon Stadium in National Women’s Soccer League action.
After a goalless opening 45 minutes, San Diego found the breakthrough in the 56th minute when Lia Godfrey (56′) put the hosts in front. That goal shifted the rhythm of the match decisively, rewarding a Wave side that had been building pressure and controlling territory for long stretches.
Chicago had managed to keep things level before the interval, but the visitors struggled to turn defensive resistance into attacking threat. San Diego’s control of possession and steady flow of chances eventually told, and the home side doubled the advantage in the 72nd minute through Melanie Barcenas (72′), putting the fixture beyond doubt.
The numbers underlined San Diego’s authority. The Wave finished with 59.1 percent possession, 20 total shots and 8 shots on target, while Chicago were limited to just 2 shots and only 1 effort on target. Just as telling was the set-piece pressure: San Diego won four corners, and Chicago did not win one.
There was an early sign of Chicago’s growing difficulty in the second half when Brianna Pinto went into the book in the 53rd minute. Three minutes later, Godfrey made the Stars pay with the opening goal, and from there San Diego looked increasingly comfortable managing the match.
At 1-0, Chicago still had a window to find a way back, but Barcenas’ finish in the 72nd minute gave the Wave the cushion their overall display deserved. From that point, the hosts saw out the closing stages with composure in front of an announced crowd of 12,810.
The result lifts San Diego Wave FC to 3-0-1 on the young season, while Chicago Stars FC fall to 1-0-3. For the Wave, this was the kind of complete home performance managers look for: control on the ball, defensive discipline, and the quality to turn pressure into goals when the openings finally arrived.
