Portland Thorns FC turned a tight first half into a convincing second-half win on Saturday, beating Kansas City Current 2-0 at Providence Park in National Women’s Soccer League action.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Thorns found their breakthrough in the 53rd minute when Olivia Moultrie (53′) calmly converted from the penalty spot to give the home side the lead. It was the moment Portland’s control began to show on the scoreboard after a first half in which they had already looked the more assertive side in possession.

Kansas City tried to respond, but Portland continued to dictate the rhythm of the match and created the better openings. The second goal arrived 10 minutes later, with Reilyn Turner (63′) rising to head home and double the advantage. At 2-0, the Thorns had the cushion their overall performance deserved.

Portland finished with 59.3 percent possession, 18 total shots and seven efforts on target, underlining how much of the attacking initiative they carried. Kansas City, by contrast, managed six shots and four on target, while also earning more corners, 6-3, but they could not turn those set-piece opportunities into a route back into the fixture.

The first half had its share of edge without any goals. M.A. Vignola went into the book for Portland in the 21st minute, while Ellie Bravo-Young was shown a yellow card for Kansas City in the 32nd minute and Croix Bethune followed her into the referee’s notebook in the 34th. Kayla Sharples later added another booking for the visitors in the 78th minute as frustration grew.

For Portland, this was a mature home performance built on territorial control and sharper finishing after the interval. For Kansas City, the result continues a difficult run, and they will rue not making more of the moments they did have.

The difference, ultimately, came in a clinical 10-minute spell after halftime: Moultrie from the spot in the 53rd minute, then Turner with a header in the 63rd. That was enough to send the Providence Park crowd of 16,734 home happy and hand the Thorns another valuable three points.
