Denver Summit FC and Washington Spirit had to settle for a point apiece after a competitive 0-0 draw at Empower Field at Mile High on Saturday in the National Women’s Soccer League.
In front of a crowd of 63,004 in Denver, neither side could find the decisive touch, even though the fixture offered enough tension, physicality and half-chances to keep the contest alive deep into second-half stoppage time.
Washington enjoyed a slight edge in possession at 52.9 percent and finished with 10 total shots to Denver’s nine, but the margins were slim throughout. Both teams managed only two shots on target, which told the story of an afternoon defined more by defensive shape and discipline than attacking fluency.
Denver, playing at home, looked organized without the ball and showed enough attacking intent to ask questions, particularly through sustained spells that led to three corners and eight shot-assist situations. Washington matched that creativity number with eight shot assists of their own and forced four corners, yet neither attack could convert pressure into a goal.
The match grew increasingly combative after the interval. Washington midfielder Hal Hershfelt went into the book in the 72nd minute, and Denver defender Kaleigh Kurtz followed with a yellow card in the 83rd minute as both teams fought to gain an edge in the closing stages.
Still, the breakthrough never came. Denver’s back line held firm when Washington tried to push the tempo, while the Spirit defense remained composed against the hosts’ attempts to turn home support into late momentum. It was the kind of stalemate where one clean final ball or one sharper finish might have changed everything, but neither side could supply it.
For Denver Summit FC, the draw moves the club to 1-2-1 and extends an encouraging early sense of competitiveness in a new campaign. For Washington Spirit, now 0-3-1, it is another draw in a season that has so far produced tight margins, if not yet the winning touch.
There were no goal scorers to report from this fixture, but that does not mean it lacked substance. This was a proper league battle: even, intense and ultimately unresolved, with both clubs earning something from a disciplined defensive display.
