Washington Spirit were denied a home victory late on Wednesday night as Utah Royals battled back for a 1-1 draw at Audi Field in the National Women’s Soccer League.

The Spirit made the brighter first-half impression count in the 18th minute when Rebeca Bernal headed home in the 18th minute to give the hosts a deserved advantage. It was a goal that rewarded Washington’s early pressure and helped the home side take a 1-0 lead into the interval.

There was little to separate the sides across the full 90 minutes, and the numbers reflected that balance. Utah edged possession at 50.1 percent to Washington’s 49.9, while the Royals also finished with a slight advantage in total shots, 18 to 16. Washington, though, carried plenty of threat themselves, forcing six shots on target and winning seven corners.

Utah stayed in the fixture and gradually grew into the second half, asking more questions of the Spirit back line as the clock ticked down. Their persistence paid off in the 84th minute when Mina Tanaka scored in the 84th minute, hauling the Royals level and silencing the home crowd.

That late goal ensured the points were shared in a match that felt competitive throughout rather than one-sided. Washington will be frustrated after leading for so long, especially on home soil, but Utah deserved credit for staying composed and finding a way back into the contest.

Both teams had moments of attacking quality, with the Royals producing 15 shot assists to Washington’s 11, while the Spirit’s set-piece threat remained evident all evening. Kameron Simmonds also entered the referee’s book for Utah in the 21st minute during a match that was otherwise not overly ill-tempered.

In the end, this was a fair draw between two sides that matched each other closely for long stretches. Bernal’s first-half header appeared likely to settle it, only for Tanaka’s late intervention to make sure Utah left the capital with a valuable point.
