FC Dallas survived a first-half collapse and rode a late surge to claim a dramatic 4-3 victory over Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium in Major League Soccer, winning a Texas derby that swung wildly from end to end before Petar Musa settled it in the 86th minute.
It looked like Dallas were on course for a comfortable evening early on. Logan Farrington opened the scoring in the 6th minute, finishing off an energetic start from the home side, and the forward doubled the advantage in the 14th minute to put Houston immediately under pressure. With Dallas pressing sharply and moving the ball with purpose, the hosts had seized complete control.
But the match flipped in stunning fashion just before the half-hour. Guilherme Augusto pulled one back for Houston in the 29th minute, Erik Sviatchenko rose to score with a header in the 31st minute, and Lawrence Ennali completed the turnaround in the 33rd minute. In the space of four chaotic minutes, Houston turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead and silenced the home crowd.
That first half had all the intensity expected of a derby fixture. Dallas were punished for losing their defensive shape, while Houston suddenly found space to attack with speed and conviction. By the interval, the visitors had all the momentum despite Dallas’ blistering opening.
The second half brought another twist. Dallas drew level in the 54th minute when Houston defender Sviatchenko turned the ball into his own net, a cruel moment for a player who had already experienced every side of the evening after scoring at one end in the first half.
Houston’s task became even harder in the 68th minute when Sviatchenko was shown a red card, leaving the Dynamo to negotiate the closing stages with 10 men. From there, Dallas increasingly pinned the visitors back, using their extra man and territorial control to force the issue.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 86th minute. Musa found the decisive goal late on, capping Dallas’ comeback and sending Toyota Stadium into celebration after a match that felt as though it could produce almost any ending.
Farrington’s brace in the 6th and 14th minutes set the tone for Dallas’ best attacking spells, while Musa delivered the winner in the 86th. For Houston, Guilherme Augusto struck in the 29th minute, Sviatchenko scored in the 31st minute before later suffering the misfortune of an own goal in the 54th and a red card in the 68th, and Ennali added Houston’s third in the 33rd minute.
Statistically, Dallas just about earned the edge. The home side held 54.6 percent possession, outshot Houston 16-10, and put six efforts on target. Houston remained dangerous throughout, particularly during that devastating first-half burst, and won eight corners, but the red card shifted the balance of the contest in the final stretch.
In the end, this was one of those MLS nights that had everything: a flying start, a rapid-fire comeback, an own goal, a sending-off, and a late winner. Dallas took the points, Houston were left to rue what might have been, and the Texas derby delivered a match few inside Toyota Stadium will forget anytime soon.
