Bayern Munich completed the job in ruthless fashion on Wednesday night, beating Atalanta 4-1 at the Allianz Arena to book their place in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals with a thumping 10-2 aggregate triumph.
Already in a strong position coming into this second leg, Bayern never allowed the fixture to drift into doubt. Vincent Kompany’s side controlled the tempo, dominated possession and steadily wore Atalanta down before exploding into life after the interval. In the end, the Bundesliga giants turned a one-goal halftime lead into another emphatic European result in München.
The breakthrough arrived in the 25th minute, when Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot to put Bayern 1-0 ahead on the night. It was a deserved lead for the home side, who spent much of the opening half camped in Atalanta territory, circulating the ball sharply and pinning the visitors back. Bayern finished with 70.4 percent possession, 25 total shots and 8 efforts on target, numbers that reflected their territorial dominance throughout the evening.
Atalanta managed to reach the interval only one goal down, but any hope of a comeback disappeared in a devastating spell early in the second half. Kane struck again in the 54th minute, doubling Bayern’s lead with his second goal of the match and giving the tie an even more lopsided look on aggregate. Just two minutes later, Lennart Karl made it 3-0 on the night in the 56th minute, capping a rapid Bayern surge that left Atalanta reeling.
With the Allianz Arena in full voice, Bayern continued to attack. Luis Díaz added a fourth in the 70th minute, putting the finishing touch on a polished attacking display and underlining the gulf between the sides over the two legs. Kane’s brace will take the headlines, but Bayern’s overall attacking fluency stood out just as much, with three assists and wave after wave of pressure across the pitch.
To Atalanta’s credit, they kept pushing and found a late consolation through Lazar Samardzic in the 85th minute. It did little to alter the outcome of the match or the tie, but it at least gave the visitors something to show for their efforts in a difficult night against elite opposition.
The final scoreline told a familiar story. Bayern were sharper in possession, more clinical in the decisive moments and far more imposing physically and technically. Atalanta did register 14 shots and 8 on target of their own, but they were largely chasing the match after Kane’s opener and could not cope once Bayern accelerated in the second half.
For Bayern, this was the kind of accomplished European performance supporters have come to expect at the Allianz Arena: controlled, clinical and ultimately overwhelming. Kane scored in the 25th and 54th minutes, Lennart Karl added Bayern’s third in the 56th, and Luis Díaz struck in the 70th before Samardzic replied in the 85th for Atalanta. The result sends Bayern into the last eight with real momentum and a reminder to the rest of Europe that they remain one of the most dangerous sides left in the competition.
