Brentford let a two-goal lead slip at the Gtech Community Stadium on Monday night as Wolverhampton Wanderers battled back for a 2-2 draw in an entertaining Premier League fixture.
The home side looked firmly in control before the interval after Michael Kayode opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and Igor Thiago doubled the advantage in the 37th. But Wolves stayed in the contest thanks to Adam Armstrong’s well-timed strike in the 44th minute, and substitute Tolu Arokodare completed the comeback with a 77th-minute header.
Brentford had made the sharper start and were rewarded when Kayode rose to head home in the 22nd minute, giving the Bees an early foothold. With Wolves struggling to contain Brentford’s movement, the hosts struck again on 37 minutes through Thiago, whose finish gave Brentford daylight and seemed to put Thomas Frank’s side on course for all three points.
Yet the visitors found an important response just before half-time. Armstrong, already in the book in the 24th minute, showed his composure to pull one back in the 44th minute and shift the mood of the fixture heading into the break. Brentford still led 2-1 at half-time, but Wolves had given themselves a route back.
The second half was more balanced, with Wolves seeing slightly more of the ball at 50.7 percent possession and carrying a growing threat from wide areas and set-piece situations. Brentford, who finished with just one corner to Wolves’ five, struggled to regain the control they had enjoyed in the first period.
That pressure eventually told in the 77th minute. Moments after Kristoffer Ajer was shown a yellow card for Brentford, Arokodare climbed highest to head in the equaliser and cap Wolves’ recovery. It was a deserved leveller for the visitors, who ended the night with 13 shots to Brentford’s 10 and four efforts on target to the hosts’ three.
There were chances for a late winner, but neither side could find the decisive touch in a tense closing spell that also saw Angel Gomes booked in the 89th minute and José Sá cautioned deep into stoppage time.
In the end, a draw felt like a fair reflection of a fixture that swung dramatically across the 90 minutes. Brentford will rue the missed opportunity after such a strong first half, while Wolves can take genuine encouragement from the character they showed to come from 2-0 down away from home.
Goals: Michael Kayode 22′, Igor Thiago 37′; Adam Armstrong 44′, Tolu Arokodare 77′.
