Angel City FC opened their National Women’s Soccer League campaign in emphatic fashion on Sunday night, sweeping aside Chicago Stars FC 4-0 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

The home side were on top for long stretches and fully merited the margin of victory, finishing with 59.3 percent possession, 18 total shots, 10 corners and six efforts on target. Chicago, by contrast, were limited to seven shots and just two on target as Angel City controlled the rhythm of the fixture and punished their visitors with a ruthless second-half spell.

For all of Angel City’s early pressure, the breakthrough did not arrive until the 33rd minute. Kennedy Fuller found the opening goal on 33′, rewarding the hosts’ bright attacking play and giving the crowd at BMO Stadium the lead their side had threatened to claim for much of the first half.

Chicago tried to stay within touching distance before the interval, but they struggled to establish sustained possession and were often pinned back by Angel City’s territorial control. Bea Franklin’s yellow card on 39′ underlined the pressure the visitors were facing as they went into the break trailing 1-0.

If the first half was controlled, the second half was overwhelming. Angel City doubled their lead on 53′ when Evelyn Shores rose to score with a header, a goal that shifted the fixture firmly in the home side’s favor and exposed Chicago’s growing defensive vulnerability.

From there, Angel City smelled blood. Ary Borges added a third on 66′, capping another slick attacking move, and just four minutes later Maiara Niehues made it 4-0 on 70′ to complete a devastating stretch that put the result beyond any doubt.

That four-goal display reflected just how sharp Angel City looked going forward. With 14 shot assists and three credited assists on the night, the hosts consistently found dangerous spaces and moved the ball with purpose. Their set-piece threat also played a major role, with 10 corners keeping Chicago under relentless pressure.

Just as impressive was the defensive side of the performance. Angel City allowed little room for Chicago to build momentum, conceding only three corners and limiting the visitors to brief spells in advanced areas. It was the sort of complete display managers look for early in a season: authority in possession, efficiency in front of goal, and concentration without the ball.

In the end, this was a statement result for Angel City FC: Kennedy Fuller on 33′, Evelyn Shores on 53′, Ary Borges on 66′, and Maiara Niehues on 70′ sealing a deserved 4-0 victory. For Chicago Stars FC, there will be lessons to absorb after a difficult evening in Los Angeles; for Angel City, this was an encouraging, high-tempo performance that suggests plenty of attacking promise lies ahead.
