Real Salt Lake made it two wins from three fixtures to open their MLS campaign, claiming a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Austin FC at America First Field in Sandy, Utah on Saturday evening. It was a match that burst into life inside the opening half-hour before settling into a tense tactical battle, only for Austin to give the home faithful a scare deep into stoppage time.
A Bright Start Brings the Goals
The opening exchanges were feisty — Jon Gallagher picking up a yellow card as early as the 6th minute set the tone for a combative evening — but it was RSL who drew first blood. In the 18th minute, left back Jon Bell powered home a header to give the hosts the lead, a composed finish that rewarded Real Salt Lake’s early pressure and hinted at the set-piece threat they would carry throughout the night.
Austin FC responded, however, and within minutes had drawn level — though not in the fashion they would have hoped. In the 24th minute, Oleksandr Svatok turned the ball into his own net, gifting Real Salt Lake a two-goal cushion almost as quickly as Austin had threatened to find their footing. It was a cruel moment for the visitors, and one that would prove decisive over the course of 90 minutes.
The first half ended 2–1 in RSL’s favour, with Austin FC forced to reflect on the misfortune of conceding through one of their own defenders just minutes after their momentum had seemed to be building.
A Second Half of Patience and Pressure
Real Salt Lake came out after the break looking to manage their advantage, and with 60.4% possession across the match and 23 shots fired — eight of which were on target — they largely succeeded in doing so. Austin FC, by contrast, managed just 10 shots and three on target, struggling to break down a disciplined RSL backline for long stretches of the second half.
Discipline was not entirely maintained in the middle of the park, however. Jayden Nelson was booked for RSL in the 51st minute, adding to a growing card count for the home side, while goalkeeper Brad Stuver was shown yellow in the 75th minute — a moment that frustrated the home dugout.
Spierings Sparks a Late Scare
Just when it appeared RSL had done enough to see out the three points comfortably, substitute Stijn Spierings pulled one back for Austin FC in the 88th minute, setting up a tense finale at America First Field. The goal dragged Austin back into the contest with precious little time remaining and sent the Austin supporters into a frenzy.
RSL held firm, though. Six minutes of stoppage time were played out — Ilie Sánchez picking up a yellow card in the 90+3rd minute as tensions boiled over — but the home side ultimately clung on to clinch the victory. The full-time whistle was met with relief as much as celebration.
Verdict
Real Salt Lake move to a 2-0-1 record through their opening MLS fixtures, a solid return that reflects both their quality and their resilience. Austin FC, now at 1-1-1, will be frustrated by the own goal that effectively ended the match as a contest in the first half. Manager and players alike will know that you cannot gift opponents a goal at this level and expect to recover away from home.
The fixture was broadcast nationally on Apple TV, and fans who tuned in were treated to exactly the kind of drama that makes MLS must-watch viewing in the early weeks of the season.
